We provide oak barrels from Tonnellerie Sylvain and Tonnellerie Meyrieux in several sizes, styles and toast levels. We also offer oak tanks from Marc Grenier.
All Sylvain and Meyrieux barrels are made of French oak, grown in state-owned forests managed by the ONF, certified PEFC on the basis of sustainable development and management criteria. They select trees grown with certified sustainable practices, of 200 years of age, 50 - 80 cm in diameter. These practices have been in place since Luis XV over 360 years ago and give proven results. The trees struggle for sunlight so the best and strongest keep climbing while natural selection eliminates weaker ones.Other countries try to replicate French Forests growing practices but even if they had the same wood species they don't have the same climate, thus French oak simply cannot be replicated.
JeanLuc Sylvain owns the two cooperages and foudrerie and has a tremendous knowledge and passion for continually sourcing the best French wood since the '80s. Did you know that trees can be purchased from the same forest parcel over a period of 20 years?! This is one of the reasons we can make your barrels with consistent wood character.
Both cooperages are known for making a consistent barrel although they differ radically in style.
The Tonnellerie Sylvain in the outskirts of Bordeaux produces some 30,000 barrels a year and selects wood profiles based on grain tightness. Sylvain barrels are recognized worldwide for their elegant aromas and will help wine to have better structure in the mid and back palate.
