We provide oak barrels from the Tonnellerie Sylvain and Tonnellerie Meyrieux in several sizes, styles and toast levels. We also offer oak tanks from the Foudrerie Marc Grenier.
Manu is responsible for the California Central and South Coast, Oregon, Washington State and British Columbia.
All our barrels and tanks are made of 100% French oak, grown in state-owned forests managed by the ONF, certified PEFC on the basis of sustainable development and management criteria. They select trees grown with certified sustainable practices, of 200 years of age, 50 - 80 cm in diameter.
These practices have been in place since Luis XV over 360 years ago and give proven results. The trees struggle for sunlight so the best and strongest keep climbing while natural selection eliminates weaker ones.
Other countries try to replicate French Forests growing practices but even if they had the same wood species they don't have the same climate, thus French oak simply cannot be replicated.
JeanLuc Sylvain owns the two cooperages and foudrerie and has a tremendous knowledge and passion for continually sourcing the best French oak since the '80s. Did you know that oak trees can be purchased from the same forest parcel over a period of 20 years?! This is one of the reasons we can make your barrels with consistent oak character.
Both cooperages are well respected worldwide and known for making a consistent product. However, the barrels from Sylvain or Meyrieux differ radically in style.

The Tonnellerie Sylvain is in the outskirts of Bordeaux and produces some 30,000 barrels a year selecting oak profiles based on grain tightness. Sylvain barrels are recognized worldwide for their elegant aromas and will help wine to have better structure in the mid and back palate.
You will certainly find Sylvain barrels in the most prestigious Chateaux in Bordeaux, and other world top wine regions making Cabernet, Merlot (or other Bdx varietals). However it shouldn't surprise you to see them married more and more to other grape varietals. In fact its over two decades that Sylvain barrels have been succesfully adopted on varietals like Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese (to name a few) all over the world. View Meyrieux Welcome Page The Tonnellerie Meyrieux near Beaune in Burgundy crafts about 4,000 barrels/year choosing oak trees from specific forests plots. Thanks to the knowledge and purchasing power of Jean Luc Sylvain they can buy oak trees even from more expensive and famous forest lots so that they can include a small portion in their barrel oak selection. What matters most for the Meyrieux oak profile comes from blending different nuances of an entire tree trunk (regardless of grain tightness). Their formula gives a lot of complexity to the structuring tannins and aromas.
Should you find yourself visiting underground cellars in Burgundy you often see Meyrieux barrels for the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Travel around other wine regions around the world and see them performing beautifully with Syrah or Sangiovese.
The JLS group now includes Marc Grenier, a prestigious Oak Tank builder in Beaune, Burgundy.
